The most complete Indian Fort
from the Great Lakes to the Rockies. Fort Sisseton was originally established in
1864 and served as an active Army outpost until 1889. A visitor's center is open
daily.
Fort Sisseton Historical Festival held every year
in June. This festival showcases use of one of the top 10 restored military
outposts in the U.S. Muzzle loaders rendezvous at the post and compete in
such events as clay pigeon shooting, tomahawk throwing contests and a weekend of
history and fun.
Military drills, draft horse pulls, SD Old Time Fiddlers, square dancing and
frontier craftsmanship are other features of this popular festival. Take
part in the military costume ball, and enjoy the melodramas,
medicine show, children's activities and much more. Camping is available along
