SWIMMING POOL:  Britton’s newest city addition!!  This outdoor swimming pool features zero depth entry, a Jr. Olympic swim area with lanes, 2 diving boards and a 150 FT. WATER SLIDE!  A concession area and playground are also part of the complex

AEROBICS:  Exercise and fitness classes are available at The Workout throughout most of the year.  The Workout is located on Main Street in downtown Britton.  Contact Jeani Amacher

 

ARCHERY:  The Archery League is active throughout the summer months.  This team travels to various tournaments with practices held at the Britton Sportsmen’s Club.  Other shooting sports sponsored by the Sportsmen’s club include trap shooting and gun safety and they assist with youth BB gun.  Contact Boyd Erickson.

 

BASEBALL/SOFTBALL:  This sport is available to all ages--Boys & Girls Tee ball (ages 6-7 yrs); Boys Peewees (8-10 yrs); Boys Midget Baseball (11-14 yrs); Girls Softball (8-18 yrs); Teener Baseball (14-16 yrs)—Contact Laura Olsen. Legion Baseball is also available and sponsored by the American Legion—Contact Ron Tchida.  An Amateur Baseball team is also active—Contact    ?     .  Britton’s new tri-complex on the south edge of town is bringing in more tournaments and is able to hold lots of practice times!

BASKETBALL:  A men’s (over 25) traveling basketball team is available in Britton—Contact Bill Meyer; Youth basketball and 3 on 3 basketball teams are also active and travel to compete in surrounding communities.  Contact Mary Ramsey.

 

BOWLING:  Britton has an eight lane bowling alley.  Two women’s and two men’s leagues run from September-April.  Check out “Extreme Bowling” on weekends just for fun!  Contact The Hunters 605-448-5723.

BOY SCOUTS:  The Boy Scouts are active all year round in Britton with Pack meetings, Den meetings, selling popcorn, derby racing and just learning to become a better citizen.  Contact Tom Farber.

 

CAMPING:  Many Britton community residents love the outdoors!  Beautiful Roy Lake State Park is 20 miles east of Britton and offers electrical camping spots, tent camping, nice swimming beach, fishing area, boat access, picnic shelter, hiking paths, resort and restroom/shower facilities—Contact SD Park & Recreation Dept. at 1-800-710-CAMP. Other State Parks which offer camping within approximately 1-1 1/2 hours of Britton include Mina Lake, Richmond Lake, Pickerel Lake, Fort Sisseton, Sandy Shore, and Sica Hollow.  The City of Britton also has 4 camping spots with electrical hookups and a dumping station just to the south of the new swimming pool and tennis courts on the north side of town—Contact City Hall 605-448-5721.

DANCE:  Dancing is available for all age groups!  For youth girls we have the Heartbreakers (ages 3 yrs – Kindergarten); Drill Team (grades 2nd – 5th); and Lite Stick (grades 6th – 8th), all of which are coordinated by Jeani Amacher.  Square Dancing is also popular in the Britton area and is coordinated by the Britton Barnburners—Contact Carla Grimsrud.

 

EXERCISE/FITNESS:  A new exercise/weigh lifting facility is now available to folks in the Britton area—part of the school’s new auditorium addition is a modern weight lifting/exercise room with several stationery bikes, stair-step machines, free weights and other equipment designed for easy public access at no charge. FISHING:  Ice fishing and summertime fishing are great pastime hobbies for many folks in this area.  The Northeast corner of South Dakota is known for its fantastic fishing lakes.  As near as 15-20 miles from Britton you will find great fishing.  Licenses are available at 4 Seasons C-Store, Meyer Hardware Hank and Cliff’s Convenience Store.   Contact Aaron Kahre for more info.

4H:  The Marshall County Extension Office sponsors several 4H groups whom are active all year long:  Clever Clovers, Prairie Pasques, Hillbillie Hustlers, Eager Beavers and Hills & Valleys are just some of the county groups that exist in this community.  Newcomers are always welcome!  Ladies Extension Clubs are also common.  Contact Extension Office for more info 605-448-5171.

 

GAMBLING:  Video Lottery, punch boards, power ball, scratch offs and other types of gambling are available in most of the restaurant/lounge establishments in Britton, such as the VFW, Hunters Motel & Lounge, Three Z’s, Cliff’s Convenient Store, Holland Brothers, Wickre’s Restaurant, and Britton Country Club.  Dakota Connection Casino is 35 miles east of Britton right along Hwy 10.

GIRL SCOUTS:  These young girls are busy earning their badges in Britton.  They sell cookies and nuts, volunteer in many community activities and learn through experiments and projects.  Brownies—Contact Kelsi Heer; Daisies—Contact Ann Stiegelmeier; Jr. Scouts—Contact Sharon Stout.

GOLF:  Britton has a beautiful 9 hole golf course and driving range.  Men’s and women’s leagues are very popular along with a Jr. League for young people.  Memberships are encouraged, however, this course is also open to the public.  The Britton Country Club is located 1 ½ miles east and ¼ mile north of Britton.  Contact the Britton Country Club for more information 448-2512.

 

 
LIBRARY:  Also new to the city is the Britton Public Library.  Youth reading programs, story hour, and adult book clubs are very common activities.  The library also has large print books, audio books, internet access, fax & copy machines and a comfortable reading lounge with coffee.  Contact the library at 605-448-2800.

 

MOVIE THEATRE:  Britton’s very unique Strand Theatre is open on weekends featuring the most recent and popular movies for all ages.  On Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings the theatre lights up downtown Britton!  Occasionally kids matinees are also available.  Contact the Strand Theatre at 605-448-2810 to see what’s coming up!

MOTORCYCLING:  This has become a very popular past time for folks in Britton.  A newly formed group called the “North Country Cruisers” gathers on Wednesday’s during the summer months for a supper run.  They also do other fundraising events throughout the year.  Contact Aaron Kahre for more info.

 

SENIOR CITIZENS ACTIVITIES:  The Fun After Fifty Club keeps our seniors active.  Card games, pool, bingo, exercising, celebrating birthdays or just plain socializing at the senior center keeps this group young!  The Senior Center is located right on Main Street in downtown Britton.  Contact Lela Olson.

 

SOCCER:  Spring and Fall sessions are available for K-14 age groups.  Contact Melody Wenz or Pam Price.

SNOWMOBILING:  Young and old enjoy snowmobiling on the area lakes or on the trails.  The Northeast Trail is 111 miles through the scenic Sica Hollow State Park (approximately 30 miles from Britton) and hits other northeast South Dakota communities.  Contact SD Department of Game, Fish & Parks for more info 605-773-3391.

 

 

SWIMMING:  Britton has a great Swim Team program.  Over 50 kids ages 5-18 practice daily and participate in many meets in surrounding communities.  This award winning team will be able to sponsor tournaments here in Britton now that the new pool is available.  Also swimming lessons are available for all ages as well as pool exercising  and therapy programs.  Contact Britton City Hall for more information.

VOLLEYBALL:  Britton has an indoor co-ed winter league and an outdoor co-ed summer league.  Both are favorites to young and old!  Contact Jamie Rothe for more information.

 

WRESTLING:  An AAU youth wresting program is also very active in Britton during the winter months.  Contact Tony Hoisington.
