BRITTON COMMUNITY EDUCATION

Main purpose or Mission Statement:  To strive to support and promote educational, cultural and leisure time activities and programs for citizens of all ages to help create a community where citizens can continue to grow and learn in order to promote healthy and productive lives.

Meetings:  Board meets three times a year.

Projects or events this organization coordinates or sponsors:  Coordinate classes on various topics and offer them to the community; classes run in two sessions Sept-Dec and Jan-April.

BRITTON CUB SCOUTS

Pack 31

Main purpose or Mission Statement:  To provide young boys the opportunity to learn what it means to be a good citizen, provide organized fun with a group and promote family participation.  Scouting promotes doing your best for God and your country, helping other people and to obey authority.

Meetings:  Pack meetings once/month and dens within the Pack meet at least two times/month.

Projects or events this organization coordinates or sponsors:  Popcorn sales (Oct.); Scouting for Food (for food pantry-end of Oct.); Blue & Gold Banquet (Feb.); Pinewood Derby (Mar.); winter fun of some kind each winter (i.e., ice fishing, sledding, roller skating); two day family campout at Fort Sisseton.

BRITTON GIRL SCOUTS

Main purpose or Mission Statement:  Offer young girls and women a chance to earn badges while volunteering, performing science experiments, making arts & crafts, exercising, playing games, baking, etc.

Meetings:  Monthly (dates vary with each troop)

Projects or events this organization coordinates or sponsors:  Nut sales (October); cookie sales (January); and participate in many community events.

BRITTON –HECLA PARENT/TEACHER ASSOCIATION (PTA)

Main Purpose or Mission Statement:  To provide parent/teacher interaction with the school and students.

Meetings:  Approximately four times a year.

Projects or events this organization coordinates or sponsors:  PTA Carnival (March); Homecoming Parade (Aug/Sept); Missoula Children’s Theatre (Dec); Sponsors of the Florida Band/Music Trip (June); Reflections Program; scholarships; and assist with getting items that the school needs.

BRITTON PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD

Main purpose or Mission Statement:  To oversee the basic operation of the public library.

Meetings:  First Monday of each month at 5:00 p.m.

Projects or events this organization coordinates or sponsors:  The public library has a Children’s Story Hour; Adult Ready Program; periodic book sales; provides a comfortable reading area with coffee; offers public services such as a copy machine, fax machine, access to the internet; audio books and large print books; also has a feature display every two weeks.

Main purpose or Mission Statement:  To provide K-12 the best quality education in a safe environment.

Meetings:  Second Monday of each month.

BRITTON STUDY CLUB

Main purpose or Mission Statement:  Motto is “Everything to help, nothing to hinder”.  This group gathers to learn and have a better understanding of various topics, such as, music, art, legislation, etc.  The program changes each year.

Meetings:  Third Friday of each month.

COMMUNITY AND FAMILY EXTENSION LEADERS

Main purpose or Mission Statement:  Our mission is joining together to broaden our horizons by maintaining quality family life through education and leadership.

Meetings:  Fall & Spring meetings with various 4-H Clubs in the organization meeting monthly.

Projects or events this organization coordinates or sponsors:  Craft mini-workshop (October); Youth in Action Awards to 4-H participants; participate at the Farm & Home Show with displays; and take part in educational programs provided by the Extension Educators.

LAKE REGION RETIRED TEACHERS

Main purpose or Mission Statement:  Promote continued involvement of school retirees in community service and decision making in the local community.

Meetings:  Fourth Thursday of each month.

Projects or events this organization coordinates or sponsors:  Host meetings with different speakers and topics throughout the year such as, “Animal Care”, “Beauty in Art”, “Preschool”, “Motherhood-Second Time”, “Veteran’s Service”; and memorial services, installation (May).

MARSHALL COUNTY EXTENSION OFFICE

Main purpose or Mission Statement:  To extend South Dakota State University resources and research to the counties and communities in South Dakota.

Meetings:  Quarterly or as needed.

Projects or events this organization coordinates or sponsors:  4-H sponsored events, such as, Achievement Days (July), National 4-H Week (Oct.), and project workshops; Livestock and Agronomy programs; Family and Consumer Science Programs; CFEL Clubs; and Character Counts, SOFY Camps, Ecology Days and Youth Programs.

MARSHALL COUNTY 4-H

Main purpose or Mission Statement:  To help young people become self-directing, productive and contributing members of society through programs that help them develop inquiring minds, learn practical skills and gain experience in a leadership role.

Meetings:  Individual clubs meet monthly.

Projects or events this organization coordinates or sponsors: Shooting Sports Invitational (March); Public Presentations Contest; Fashion Review; Special Foods Contest (June/July); Achievement Days (mid July); participate at the State Fair (late July); County Horse Show (August); State Horse Show (Labor Day Weekend); State Trap Shoot (Second weekend in Sept); Recognition Event (October).

MARSHALL COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Main purpose or Mission Statement:  Collecting, preserving and sharing the history and people of Marshall County, South Dakota .

Meetings:  Once a month April through October.

Projects or events this organization coordinates or sponsors:  Each member participates individually at Fort Sisseton Festival; host an annual banquet with a speaker.
