10.12.010 Speed restrictions--Basic rule.
Every person operating or driving a vehicle of any character
on a street within the city shall drive in a careful and prudent manner, and at
a rate of speed no greater than is reasonable and proper under the conditions
existing at the point of operation, taking into account amount and character of
traffic, condition of brakes, weight of vehicle, grade and width of highway,
condition of surface, and freedom of obstruction to view ahead, and so as not to
unduly or unreasonably endanger the life, limb, property, or other rights of any
person entitled to the use of the street or highway. (Prior code §

10.12.020 Speed limits.
The following speed limits apply to streets of Britton,
except for those streets or parts of streets where the limits have been posted
otherwise:
A. Thirty (30) miles per hour on state highways through the
city;
B. Twenty-five (25) miles per hour on all other streets in
the city;
C. Fifteen (15) miles per hour in all school zones. (Prior

10.12.030 Minimum speed regulations.
A. No person shall drive a motor vehicle at such a slow speed
as to impede or block the normal and reasonable movement of traffic except when
reduced speed is necessary for safe operation or in compliance with
law.
B. Law officers are authorized to enforce this provision by
directions to drivers, and in the event of apparent wilful disobedience to this
provision and refusal to comply with direction of an officer in accordance with
this section, the continued slow operation by a driver shall be a misdemeanor,
except that inability to comply with such order will not be construed as wilful
disobedience. (Prior code § 14-4-3)
10.12.040 Permission to hold speed contest.
No race or contest for speed shall be held and no person
shall engage in or aid or abet in any motor vehicle speed contest or exhibition
of speed on a public street without written permission of the sheriff and unless
the street is fully and efficiently patrolled for the entire distance over which
such race or contest for speed is to be held. (Prior code §

10.12.050 Penalty.
Any person violating a provision of this chapter for which
another penalty has not been provided shall, upon conviction of such violation,
be punished as set forth in Chapter 1.16 of this code. (Prior code §
